The U11 boys team was invited to play up in Al Raha versus the other Taaleem schools for the annual Inter Taaleem tournament. Having had a poor finals last term the boys were keen to make amends for those matches. Although the pitches were different to the ones we have played on before, a bit narrower and shorter, the boys coped well and adapted to the conditions and the particularly hot day.
The results for the day were: GCS 3 v Al Raha 0 win GCS 1 v DBS 1 draw GCS 0 v DBSJP 1 lost GCS 1 v JBS 0 win GCS 2 v UTS 1 win As a result of this 'round robin' style event there was no 'finals' as such. So the boys finished in second place for the whole tournament, which was a fantastic result after a long day of football! Well done boys

On Thursday, 12 of January GCS hosted the Annual Taaleem Tournament for the under 12's and under 14's for both boys and girls. The tournament was between Greenfield Community School (GCS), Uptown School (UPT), Jumeriah Baccalaureate School (JBS), Dubai British School (DBS), Dubai British School Jumeriah Park (DBSJP) and American Academy Al-Mizhar (AAM) (the age groups each school participated in are in the table below). The large pitch was split into three sections with the under 14 boy and girls in two sections and the under 12 boys in the last section, the under 12 girls played their matches on the smaller pitch near the gym. Stryx Gulf kindly supplied GCS with medals (for first, second and third), trophies and umpires for each of the matches, some of which showed amazing dodging skills during the games in order to not disrupt the game. The matches in the tournament started at 1:30pm and finished at 4:15 pm with small breaks for each team in between matches while other teams played.
Through out the day GCS put up a good fight, working hard to gain possession of the ball and defend their goal simultaneously. Lucky only minor injuries were obtained and the GCS players got back up onto their feet and keep playing, hoping to win within their category. The under 14 boys and under 12 girls played 8 minute halves with 2 minute halftime between the two halves. The under 14 girls and under 12 boys played 12 minute games with no breaks between. The final results for tournament are as follows: For the under 12 girls, UPT were the winners of the tournament and the runner up was DBSJP. DBS placed first in the under 12 boys with GCS just behind them and DBSJP in third. For the under 14 girls, the winner of the tournament was yet again DBS, UPT taking home second and AAM taking home third. GCS fought hard and tried their best and tied for fourth place. Lastly, DBS took home their third win of the day in the under 14 boys category. GCS took home another second place and after a penalty shoot out, UPT finished third. Good job to all the athletes and special thanks to the parent support and the grade 11 helpers. Congratulations to our Under 9 football squad who have worked hard all season and were crowned league winners at this years’ football festival at the Rashid school for boys. Having collected their well earnt trophy, a selection of the squad played other league winners and once again shined in front of a large audience. The team got off to a positive start against Foremarke, thanks greatly to the endless brave challenges from Aryan and Jan. Two very good sides continued to battle it out, with few chances being made and thanks to Vladic’s strong hands, the team were able to get their first point on the board. After a tense and energy sapping first half against DBS, the students re-grouped well and secured their first goal of the tournament thanks to a debutant strike from Vincent. Hadi and Omar continued to cover a lot of distance to help maintain possession and were disciplined whilst keeping a strong back line formation which enabled Federico, Lian and Gabe to impress in midfield. When DBS equalised, it was crucial that the addition of Hadi in midfield would help protect a valuable point. He didn’t disappoint, making endless tackles and passes to ensure that Greenfield finished the game on the front foot. All three league winners had drawn with each other and the only way of separating all teams was by goal difference. Another opportunity for our principled students to congratulate their opponents whilst keeping their chins up for their ‘Finals’ game against Wellington. The old saying ‘Leave the best to last’ was certainly fitting as our under 9 team took to the field for their final game of the season. Our captain Omar, like he had done all afternoon, led by example. His focus and passion was equally matched by all squad members. A 20-yard free kick from the captain brought Greenfield back to 1-1 at a crucial time in the game. This was shortly followed by another clinical strike from Vincent. With two late goals, from the ever impressive Aryan, Greenfield were able to finish their campaign on a high. An incredible season with lots learnt about one another. We are sure that the boys will contain to shine and succeed in all areas of their school life and we look forward to hearing about their future sporting successes, both in and out of school. Mr Burden and Mr Hein would like to both express our gratitude to all the under 9 footballers who have attended the ECA club and football fixtures throughout the season. May we also thank our supportive parents who have encouraged and worked alongside us throughout the year and wish them and their families a peaceful winter break. Our under 9 football team have continued to reap the rewards of their hard work at training, taking a step closer to winning their league.
They welcomed Raffles Academy and with a few new debutants joining the team, it was crucial that our students caring and supportive ethics helped to ensure all the squad performed to the best of their abilities. After a close first ten-minute encounter, where Hadi, Omar and Ata stood firm in defence, Aryan was able to dribble past a few opponents before firing into the net and take the team into a half time lead. The team continued to impress with brave challenges and some fluid passing, with Ramsey and Haytham bringing some much needed energy onto the pitch to protect their lead. With the game drawing to an end, it was crucial that the whole team remained focused if they were to secure their latest victory. With Omar now dictating the offensive half of the field, Lian was able to interchange with the ever impressive Jan and Federico, and after a series of one twos, the South African secured his first goal of the campaign and put the team into an assailing 2-0 lead. With only a few minutes to go, the team were put to a final test when the visitors scored a penalty to reduce the lead to one. With the clock ticking down, the team could’ve sat back and played cautiously but as they have shown us all season, our under 9 students are risk-takers who are confident in their own abilities. They continued to support and encourage one another, producing some impressive attacks and when the whistle finally arrived our students were rewarded with another 3 points and top of the league position. We have all learnt so much more about ourselves and certain that the students will continue to shine in all areas of their school life. Congratulations boys! The team was coming off four straight wins and confidence was high, prior to the match.
The focus for the team was still to keep the ball on the ground and pass and move. The first half was a good mixture of control with the ball but very few if any shots at the RWA goal. Xavier, Yassin and Owen played well in defense but there moments in the first half when opposition players were allowed too much space. Antonios and Marc worked hard in midfield but we were slow to get back in defense if the ball was lost. In addition Gianluca had very few chances to score in the first half. With Yusuf coming on at half time GCS were looking to create something different. However, it wasn't to be as RWA managed to capitalise on some loose defending from the GCS defense and midfield. The final score was an unflattering 3-0 score line, unlucky boys but we do a have a few small things to work on for the finals. As i said we learn more from the games we lose than the matches we win. Coach Callum. The season has been progressing well for the Under 11 Boys team and we were aiming for another win against EIS Meadows. Both teams started with a game of pass and move with a lot of the possession in midfield. Both Yusuf and Matej were comfortable controlling that midfield zone. Pranav was proving hard for the opposition to defend against with his decisive runs into the box. When the opposition did attack it was clear that Adam, Nicholas and Eric had it well covered at the back and there wasn't a single save made by Rayan in the first half. When Yasin and Antonios made their appearances on the pitch they made a real impact which allowed some slick passing between GCS to set Matej up for his excellent finish to win the game 1-0. Really well played boys, it was a great team effort.
Coach Callum The Under 11 boys had another late start to their fixture but the boys were very committed and focused for the match, when it did start. The team had some more small changes but with Eric, Nicholas and Adam at the back the defense of the team was solid throughout. Combined with some good drives forward from both Eric and Nicholas there were testing the SRS defense. Matej and Antonios were strong in midfield with some excellent interplay and passing between them as well as Gianluca up front. Half time and the score was still 0-0 and both teams had looked like scoring which meant the game was quite nervy. After halftime, Owen and Xavier came on at the back and Gianluca stepped aside for Marc up front. But as a whole team the GCS boys played exceptionally well and it took a decisive push from Eric at the back to cause real problems for SRS before Matej finished off the move to ensure GCS continued to win. The game finished 1-0 to GCS and thoroughly deserved win with a few nervous moments during the game. Well played boys, Coach Callum.
Today the Greenfield Griffins girls football played a riveting match against Sumarke School and sadly lost by 1 point, the final score being GCS 1 - Sunmarke 2. During the first ten minutes of the game the opposing team managed to get 1 goal even though the goalie put up a good fight. Also during this ten minutes one of the GCS players was hit in the face with a ball as the player and her opponent were both going for the ball and both kicked it so the ball flew upwards and hit the poor GCS player in the face. Then at the start of the following ten minutes Rebecca score a goal against the opposing team managing to even out the score. That was until the following ten minutes where Sunmarke managed to score a goal after many near misses thanks to the goalkeeper. Even though during the last ten minutes GCS put all there effort into trying to score one more goal and settle for a tie they could not get the ball into the net. The woman of the match was Rebecca who put a great fight during the match. Great Job Girls, You Will Get Them Next Time!

Last night (2/11/16) our Under 19 boys football team played an away game against Raffles World Academy. The opposition managed to score both of their goals during the first half. This however did not dishearten our team. They showed great sportsmanship and kept fighting and defending as best as they could. Our first goal was scored in the second half by Kaan Pelin (Grade 11) which brought a lot of motivation and momentum back into our boys and the match. They kept pushing through and supported each other to turn the game around but unfortunately did not come out on the winning end. Better luck next time boys. Keep up the hard work!! |
